Have you ever stopped to wonder why the same issues keep appearing in your relationships?
Whether you’ve been together for six months or thirty years, or you’ve found yourself repeating the same relationship over and over with different people, there is usually something much deeper at play than the problem itself.
We often believe our relationship challenges begin with our partner.
In reality, many of them began long before we ever met.
At first, it feels like chemistry.
The attraction is instant. You feel connected, excited and convinced you’ve finally met someone different.
Then, over time, the same patterns emerge.
So, was it really chemistry?
Or was it familiarity?
One of the greatest insights I’ve gained in over 20 years as a psychotherapist and Family Systems Constellations practitioner is that we are often drawn to what is familiar, not necessarily what is healthy.
Our nervous system recognises what it already knows.
If you grew up having to earn love, you may unconsciously choose partners whose love always feels just out of reach.
If one of your parents was emotionally unavailable, you may find yourself repeatedly trying to win the love of someone who simply cannot give it.
If criticism, control, conflict or unpredictability were part of your childhood, those dynamics can become strangely familiar in adult relationships.
This isn’t because you’re broken or making poor choices.
It’s because your unconscious mind is trying to resolve something that was never resolved.
Many people come into my practice believing they’ve just had bad luck with relationships. Yet through Family Systems Constellations they often discover something much deeper. They realise they aren’t choosing randomly at all. They are repeating patterns that have been carried through their family system, often for generations.
Without knowing it, we can spend years searching for our mother or father in our partners.
We hope that this relationship will finally give us the love, acceptance, safety or approval we longed for as children.
But relationships rarely heal those childhood wounds.
They reveal them.
This is why relationships can be one of the greatest opportunities for growth. They hold up a mirror, showing us where we still carry old hurts, unconscious loyalties and unfinished business from our family of origin.
Family Systems Constellations allows us to step back and see the bigger picture.
Every family has a history.
Some families carry grief that was never spoken about. Others carry trauma, addiction, abandonment, violence, loss, exclusion, war or displacement. These experiences don’t simply disappear because time has passed. They can continue to influence future generations until someone is willing to acknowledge them.
This work isn’t about blaming parents or grandparents.
Most were doing the best they could with the awareness, resources and experiences they had. They too were shaped by the generations before them.
Healing begins when we stop resisting reality and start acknowledging it.
When we accept our family as it is – not as we wish it had been – we begin to find a healthier place within it. That doesn’t mean approving of harmful behaviour. It means recognising the truth of what has been, without carrying it into every relationship we have.
As our relationship with our family system changes, so does our relationship with ourselves.
We stop looking for someone else to complete us or heal wounds they didn’t create.
The chemistry that once pulled us towards emotionally unavailable or unhealthy partners begins to lose its grip.
Instead, we become attracted to qualities that truly sustain a relationship -kindness, respect, emotional availability, honesty and consistency.
That may not create the fireworks we once mistook for love.
But it creates something far more valuable.
A relationship where both people feel seen.
Where conflict can be repaired.
Where love doesn’t have to be earned.
Every generation has the opportunity to change something.
Perhaps your greatest contribution won’t be finding the perfect partner.
Perhaps it will be becoming the person who no longer repeats the patterns of the past, creating a healthier future for yourself, your children and the generations still to come.
